Character History: Chloe could see ghosts since before she could remember. There was an incident in Allentown when she was three, involving the ghost in the basement when she was being watched by a babysitter. Because of this ghost, who took up residence in Chloe’s basement and scared the small handful of nicer ghosts away, Chloe has a phobia of the dark, basements, and things that go bump in the night. She forgot these early experiences and encounters with the dead as she grew older, however, though her phobias of the dark and creepy basements remained.

Part way through first grade, Chloe’s mother passed away in a hit and run accident where Chloe's father had been driving. Chloe's mother's sister—her Aunt Lauren—blames Chloe's dad about the accident. While growing up, Chloe's dad is always away on business, and doesn’t really know what to do with Chloe because he doesn’t really know how to deal with kids. He may not have wanted kids, Chloe doesn’t know. He cares about her deeply, however, and provides for everything she could need financially. Chloe’s Aunt helped raise Chloe, and always provided a sanctuary for Chloe after school. Chloe moved around a lot, went to thirteen different schools, and was finally promised by her father that she could start and finish high school in one school: A.R. Gurney, an art school where she could study film. Unfortunately, it was during Chloe’s Freshman year that she finally reached puberty and was reacquainted with all the chaos she had once put behind her when she was a small child—seeing ghosts. The spirit of a dead custodial worker chased Chloe through the school, petrifying Chloe and causing her teachers and vice Principal to chase her and hold her down. It didn’t take long for Chloe to find herself in the hospital, only to hear she would have to attend a group home until she ‘got better.’ There, the doctors and nurses told her she had schizophrenia, when in all actuality, Chloe was communicating with the dead.

Lyle House—the group home for troubled teens Chloe was admitted to—was anything but ordinary. Upon her arrival six other teenagers lived there. Liz was her cheerful and friendly blonde roommate who had a bit of a problem: whenever she got angry or frightened, things would be thrown across the room without being physically touched. She believed she had a poltergeist. When problems continue arising, and Chloe was slightly injured in one such incident, Liz was ‘transferred,’ only to later return and chat with Chloe…as a ghost.

Derek Souza and Simon Bae are brothers in everything but blood. Simon is the genuine nice guy, Derek is the silent type who always seems grumpy and pissed off and is most often misunderstood. Simon seems to not really belong in Lyle House, when in reality he's a sorcerer. Simon's dad had gone missing and he and Derek were picked up and brought to Lyle House when they had nowhere else to go. While both boys want to find their dad, Derek doesn’t want to leave the safety—or confinement—of Lyle House. He’s a werewolf, and had hurt someone beyond repair once when Simon had been attacked on campus at their previous school. He fears his own strength, and believes he’s better off away from people he might unintentionally hurt if he gets angry enough.

Rae is a pyro, who is also a half-demon who can burn people simply by touch. She is content with her living arrangements, feeling as though her family had forgotten about her while she was in Lyle House, and befriends Chloe after Liz’s ‘transfer.’

Victoria is the ticking time bomb. Enough said. She’s a witch with way too much power, only has to see a spell once and can perform it without reciting the Latin words like other witches must do. She was placed into Lyle House with her mother being one of the people heading the Organization with the doctors and nurses in charge. She believes she is mentally unstable and thus takes her medicine in the hope that she’ll get better. Liz was her best friend, so when Liz is transferred things start to go downhill. Add her love interest, Simon, falling for Chloe, and Tori turns into a bitch that will do anything to make Chloe seem crazier than she already is—and thus get the girl transferred. Victoria locks Chloe into a crawl space in the basement, ties her up and duct tapes her mouth shut, and plans on leaving her there for a few hours. Chloe, in her fear and rising panic of being tied and left to rot in the dark, ends up summoning bodies that had been buried there from previous Lyle House experiments. Derek finds her, helps her deal with her fears and keeps her calm enough to be able to release the spirits she had unwittingly pulled back into their bodies.

All in all, Chloe doesn’t want to admit her abilities—that she can see ghosts and raise the dead. To admit that seems crazy, but the worst part is that if she can communicate with the dead, that meant Liz was dead, and was never truly transferred. She soon finds out that not only she, but all the kids in Lyle House have supernatural abilities, and she plans to run away when there is talk about transferring her. Derek makes plans for Simon and Chloe to escape, not allowing himself to participate. Chloe and Derek had a rough start in Lyle House, however, so they often butt heads over their stubborn streaks and have misunderstandings. Derek tried to shove the truth down Chloe’s throat—that she was a necromancer—and Chloe constantly had to barb and prick at him and never give in to his pestering, lest she never get out of Lyle House and in case really she was crazy.

Amidst making friends and enemies, sneaking out of Lyle House, and helping Derek during his first attempt at transforming into a wolf—Chloe has been very busy. In the end, Rae, Derek, Simon, and Chloe run away together, only for Chloe and Rae to split away from the guys and get caught because Rae turned them in before the escape even started. Derek and Simon get away, but Rae leads Chloe to her Aunt Lauren, who is a doctor, because Chloe had gotten hurt and needed stitches. It turns out Chloe’s Aunt was working for the doctors and nurses of Lyle House, however. She drugs Chloe and brings her to a hospital with better locks and soon Chloe is right back where she started—only now she feels hurt and betrayed, knowing her Aunt was a part of the reason her life quickly took a turn for the worse, and because her aunt knew all along that Chloe was in fact a necromancer.

Chloe realizes she and the others were genetically modified supernaturals—and not only that, they were failed experiments. Lyle House was supposed to be a rehabilitation center for them, of sorts. Either they took medicine that dampened their powers and abilities—or they were exterminated. Chloe and Derek were on a list that very well might lead to their extermination. None of them know the extent to which they were genetically altered. All they know is that thanks to the data Chloe found, only Simon was considered a ‘success.’

It turns out Chloe’s aunt, Tori’s mom, Simon’s dad, and possibly Rae’s mom were all members of something called the ‘Edison Group,’ and experimented on their own blood relatives. Chloe and Tori end up working together to escape The Edison Group and meet up with the boys, and they then travel to find Andrew, a friend of Simon and Derek’s dad who also happens to have worked with the Edison Group, though both Andrew and the boys’ Dad got out of the group years ago while they could and Andrew has been working on taking the Edison Group down ever since.

The kids’ powers are too strong, however—too abnormal and unpredictable. Other supernaturals fear them, and they especially fear Derek because werewolves were looked on as monsters in even the supernatural community. Life or death experiences quickly pull Simon, Tori, Derek, and Chloe together, though Tori always seems to be on the outskirts of their little ‘pack,’ having locked Chloe in the crawl space, and then having abandoned her later when facing a gang of girls with knives.

In the end, Chloe’s Aunt Lauren switches sides to help Chloe and her friends, Simon and Derek’s dad appears and helps them fight the Edison group in the nick of time, and Derek turns into a protective werewolf who won’t leave Chloe’s side. When all is said and done, they form a group to find other teens whom had also been unknowingly genetically modified and hope to bring the whole organization down. Chloe—and Simon’s dad—also realize something else. Victoria is Simon’s half sister, and a daughter Mr. Bae never realized he had.

Personality: Chloe is an imaginative girl who loves creating movie dialogue and scenes in her head—especially when she is attempting to talk herself out of her fears. She is afraid of the dark, and creepy basements because, let’s face it: she sees dead people. She is also quite terrified of knives when she sees them, thanks to past experiences. She feels genuine terror at the idea of accidentally summoning a spirit back to its corpse unintentionally—and possibly leaving it there because she is never the wiser. Her necromancer powers startle and terrify her at times, but she is working through her fears and uses any and all abilities at her disposal when the time calls for it. She knows what needs to be done, is responsible—most of the time—and refuses to place her burdens on others. She is strong mentally and emotionally, but sometimes she confuses her perception of strength and turns it into one of her weaknesses: her refusal to acknowledge the danger of a situation until chaos completely unfolds, all because she wanted to prove to herself she wouldn’t accidentally summon the spirit back into the dead body a mere few feet away from her and her friends.

Chloe also has a speech impediment—a stutter—that she has had since she was very young, and has been working to overcome. When she is scared, or stressed, her stutter comes back into play. For those who know Chloe well, her stutter is always a dead give away for whatever emotion she is feeling, or attempting to hold at bay. She hates feeling inferior to others, and thus hates being told what to do or how to talk around her stutter. She is constantly self-conscious of her abilities, not wanting to seem weird, or like a freak. She was told she had schizophrenia while staying at Lyle House, and the idea did not sit well with her at all. She wants to be perceived as normal, but has learned that normal is no longer in the cards for her once she finally admitted to herself she did in fact see ghosts and wasn’t really crazy.

While Chloe has things that make her tick, and draw out her temper, she is actually a really kind girl, and a very good friend. She stands up for those who don’t have anyone else to stand up for them. She is stubborn, but knows when to listen to others and play it safe. She isn’t fond of excuses—doesn’t want to seem whiny or impertinent or overly-girly—so when she is being called out she tends to up the ante, showing she won’t back down while simultaneously getting her point across, because Chloe Saunders absolutely does not sulk. (Or she does not want to seem childish or pitiful in any case.)

Powers/Abilities: Ability to raise the dead (humans, supernaturals, and animals), can communicate with ghosts/spirits, and summon the specific spirit of a person if she is at the grave site, or has a personal effect of theirs. Sometimes spirits and demons find her. These abilities of hers are much stronger than they should be for other necromancers in her canon, because Chloe doesn't need to perform specific rituals or have certain ingredients to summon spirits or banish pesky poltergeists. For this reason, many supernaturals fear her ability and question her control.

Chloe wears an amulet she received from her mother when she was young. If this talisman is removed from her being every spirit within a two-mile radius of her will be able to sense that she is a necromancer because of her aura or 'glow.' Whether the spirits want attention, have unfinished business, or cause havoc, it is almost a given that something bad will happen once Chloe's necklace is removed. If the spirit is strong enough and has the means, Chloe is left completely vulnerable without her amulet and could become partially or fully possessed. Not good.

Possessions: Her amulet, a swiss army knife, a penlight, a purse-sized can of mace (anniversary gift from her boyfriend), a small purse, granola bar, credit card and cash, plus her clothing.

Arrival: The ship.

[Shuffling noises can be heard, followed by a soft sigh of accomplishment.]

There. [A feminine voice--relatively young. Older teen?]

[Suddenly a deeper voice resounds in the background. Definitely male. Faint grumbling can be heard--nothing quite distinguishable.]

Dear Journal, [The feminine voice picks up again.]

Going in the underground tunnels. [There is no regret in her tone, simply fact. Warning, perhaps? To those who run the place, or those who remain in case she suddenly disappears or some such thing, Chloe hasn't quite decided.]

Your not so humble servant,

Chloe.

[Suddenly the deep, gruff voice can be heard in the background. Is there amusement in his tone?] Is this the ominous scene-setting part of the movie, Chloe?

[If you didn't pick up on the humor in his tone, you can definitely hear it in hers.] Maybe. We haven't found anything, yet.

[More scuffling and shuffling about can be heard, followed by a short silence.]

End scene.

[The audio clicks off.]

Log Sample: Chloe leaned over the dead homeless man, holding her breath against the stench of rot and decay. It was times like these when she was glad she didn’t have Derek’s super-human sense of smell.

Just back away slowly, think of anything but spirits trapped inside their rotting bodies, and we’ll be good, Chloe thought to herself, sneaking a peak behind her, half expecting Derek to jump out at her and give her hell for once again tracking down a dead guy with her senses.

Still. Something about this one seemed…different. Off. In learning more about herself and her abilities, she needed to explore and figure things out on her own. It had already been proven someone else wouldn’t be happy teaching a genetically modified necromancer the ropes of the trade.

A dry chuckle sounded by her ear, and Chloe whipped around only to see a shimmer of something dart away from the corner of her eye. The chuckle came again, louder this time, and Chloe chanced a single glance at the dead body only a few feet away from her before trying to concentrate on the ghost in the room—just barely making out his outline and noting his clothing matched that of the dead man before her.

The spirit of the homeless man darted out of her line of sight, and suddenly a crate launched itself off its stacked pile and headed straight for her. With a shriek, Chloe threw herself out of harm’s way, scraping her palms and knees as she overbalanced and collided with the ground. Chloe was back on her feet in record time, lest another crate was thrown her way.

“Wh-wh-wh--” Clearing her throat, Chloe attempted to calm her rapid heartbeat and tried again, anger lacing her tone. “Who are you, and what do you want?” She glared in the ghost’s general direction, mentally wondering what would be worse: playing with a telekinetic half demon spirit on her own, or getting backup only to be chewed out for having searched for the dead guy in the first place. She knew the answer already, resolutely steeling herself for the argument she knew would come.

Better to have backup than do something stupid.

The thought of being able to take on one spook by herself without needing help was exceedingly tempting, however.

Am I forgetting bits of Chloe's past? Does she not act as one would assume she would from canon? Leave remarks here, but as always: please critique with insight and give reasons and ways to overcome any bumps in the road. Thanks!
